Governor of Piura shouts expletives due to chaos in the streets of the Historic Center (VIDEO)

Governor of Piura shouts expletives due to chaos in the streets of the Historic Center (VIDEO)

A few days before the end of the year festivities, the city of Piura faces one of the worst scenarios of vehicular and economic chaos in recent years, due to the simultaneous closure of strategic avenues due to construction works. The situation has generated citizen unrest, losses for merchants and a collapse of traffic in the center and surrounding areas.

In the midst of this panorama, regional governor Luis Neyra León was involved in a tense confrontation with the press, responding with offensive expressions and raising his voice when asked about the execution of the works. The president went so far as to describe his critics as “enemies of the region” and avoided giving clear technical answers regarding the planning of the work.

During an interview, Neyra repeatedly interrupted a journalist from the Norte Sostenible media outlet and demanded that “proposals” be made to her, despite the fact that the planning and execution of public works is the direct responsibility of the authorities. “If I go fast, damn…; if I go slow, damn…”, he responded angrily, generating greater indignation.

According to a mapping of road closures, at least four fundamental axes of the city remain blocked: Grau Avenue, Don Bosco Avenue, the Historic Center and the Pachitea neighborhood, while Sullana Avenue registers partial closures. This situation directly affects transporters, neighbors and merchants, who report a drop of up to 50% in their sales.

In the case of Don Bosco Avenue, one of the main connections with the Twenty-sixth of October district, the total closure has generated additional controversy due to the felling of trees, without adequate socialization or a clear replacement plan. Meanwhile, the works on Grau Avenue and the Historic Center have deadline extensions due to unforeseen interference.

Although regional authorities maintain that the works seek to modernize Piura and prevent problems during the rainy season, specialists and citizens warn of a serious lack of coordination, planning and communication. Meanwhile, the city remains trapped between ditches and detours, with a battered local economy and an increasingly angry population.
