Senamhi: This December 21st the summer season began

This Sunday, December 21, at 10:03 a.m., the summer season officially began throughout Peru, according to the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi).

Temperatures will remain within normal ranges during the 2025-2026 season, although episodes of intense heat are expected towards February and March, with values close to 30 °C, especially in Metropolitan Lima (20.4-29.2 °C).

On the coast, normal conditions will prevail, with initially cool nights and high UV radiation indices “very high” to “extremely high.”

Senamhi recommends using sunscreen, hats, glasses and avoiding the sun during peak hours. In the mountains and Amazon, normal or higher temperatures are expected, with warmer nights in the jungle.

Rains will be normal on the coast and northern mountains, with isolated events in December-January (Cajamarca and La Libertad), and above normal in March in the eastern Andes and Amazonia.

The Multisectoral Commission in charge of the National Study of the “El Niño” Phenomenon (Enfen) maintains “Not Active” El Niño Costero and La Niña, with a greater probability of neutral (58%) or warm (32%) conditions.
