The contributions of the mining sector to the Dominican economy

He Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that the mining sector of the Dominican Republic registered significant advances during the year 2025, reflected in the increase in foreign direct investmentthe growth of exports and the strengthening of projects with social and community impact.

He Minister Joel Santos pointed out that the mining continues to be one of the main contributions to economic growth of the country, representing close to 2% of the gross domestic product (GDP), around 7% of the gross industrial product and remaining the main national export item.

  • As for the foreign direct investment (FDI), Santos indicated that the mining sector reached US$420.6 million in the second quarter of 2025, which positions the mining like him third largest receiver of foreign capital, only surpassed by the electricity and tourism sectors.

Mining exports also showed a favorable performance. Between July and September 2025, the gold exports They exceeded US$690 million, while as of October the sector accumulated exports of US$2,087.3 million, for a year-on-year growth of 42.2%, he said in a press release.

“These results translated into greater contributions to public finances, with collections that, at the end of the third quarter, amounted to RD$25,062 million, equivalent to 109% de compliance and a projection that exceeds RD$30,000 million at the end of the year,” he highlighted.

The minister also highlighted progress in social matters, including the formalization of the resettlement agreement for the expansion of the mining operation in Cotuí, Sánchez Ramírez province, which contemplates an investment of more than RD$20,000 million for the development of the communities.

In the field of artisanal mining, Energy and Mines highlighted the progress in the exploitation of larimar, including the international recognition of the Denomination of Origin “Larimar Barahona”, as well as the implementation of collective life insurance for artisanal miners and the strengthening of control and formalization mechanisms for trade.

Santos highlighted the progress in the exploration of rare earths in the province Flints and the review process Mining Law 146-71with a view to modernizing the legal framework and promoting a mining more sustainable and competitive.
