Cubans continue to face the challenges of an increasingly dollarized system, in which the national currency loses its purchasing power.

LIMA, Peru – Authorities of the Cuban regime closed some 12 establishments in Guantánamo, as a result of some 1,000 inspections in the province that detected nearly 782 violations.

The requisitions are part of a campaign that official propaganda defends as “confronting abusive prices” to “guarantee compliance with commercial regulations.”

According to the state newspaper we will win The authorities imposed 775 fines and 45 forced sales were carried out, in addition 12 establishments were closed and projects were withdrawn due to the lack of QR codes, non-compliance with the frequency of bank deposits and other repeated violations.

“Other infractions detected were outdated information boards, price alterations in products regulated by Resolution 225, such as frozen chicken, chicken mince, spaghetti, and vegetable oil,” the report states.

The note also indicates that prices were penalized elevated in products agreed upon by the Municipal Administration Council, such as sweet potato, plantain, rice, onion, cucumber, avocado, tomato and bread.

During the inspection days, the regime also seized products from Yateras and Manuel Tames, to “prevent their illegal marketing and violation of regulated prices.”

On the other hand, actions were carried out in the passenger transport sector, detecting price violations on routes such as Guantánamo-Palenque, Guantánamo-Vilorio, Guantánamo-Santiago de Cuba and Felicidad-Guantánamo.

“The transporters charged rates higher than those approved, which resulted in fines for drivers, motorists and coachmen,” highlighted the official newspaper.

In this regard, violations were verified due to the non-use of payment gateways and the provision of transportation services without an Operating License.

Since last 2024, the Government on the Island has intermittently reactivated the price cap measures promoted by the Ministry of Finance and Prices and the penalty actions against what it describes as “speculative behavior”, especially on essential products.

The situation in Guantanamo is a reflection of the general crisis that the people of the island are going through. Cubans continue to face the challenges of an increasingly dollarized system, in which the national currency loses its purchasing power and access to essential goods depends on access to foreign currencies.

The economic policy of dollarizing has been evident in recent months with the opening of more stores and services that operate exclusively in dollars, such as the sale of fuel and new mobile data plans; while the MLC, which until recently was the main currency to access basic products, is becoming increasingly inoperative.

Economic uncertainty and the lack of official access to foreign currencies keep the Cuban population dependent on the informal market to obtain the resources necessary to survive.
