Corinthians beats Vasco and wins fourth Brazilian Cup title

Corinthians are four-time champions of the Copa do Brasil. The title was achieved with a 2-1 victory over Vasco, this Sunday (21) at the Maracanã stadium, in the second match of the competition’s decision. The first decisive game between the teams ended in a 0-0 draw, last Wednesday (17) in Itaquera.Corinthians beats Vasco and wins fourth Brazilian Cup title

This is the fourth opportunity in which Timão has won the Copa do Brasil title. Previously, Corinthians secured the competition’s trophy in 1995, 2002 and 2009. With this Sunday’s victory, the Parque São Jorge team guarantees its presence in the 2026 edition of the Copa Libertadores.

The game

The confrontation began with the team led by coach Fernando Diniz trying to impose itself through association plays between its front players. Timão, who started with a quartet of markers in midfield, expected more in defense and bet on quick counterattacks.

And it was in this way that the Parque São Jorge team opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Full-back Matheuzinho hit a long ball to Yuri Alberto, who, with great freedom, dominated before hitting goalkeeper Léo Jardim, who could do nothing.

Seven minutes later, the Corinthians center forward had a crystal clear opportunity to expand. Midfielder Martinez hit a volley and the ball fell to Yuri Alberto, who finished very dangerously out wide. However, in the 30th minute, Vasco responded, when Philippe Coutinho lifted the ball from a corner kick and Thiago Mendes headed it to Hugo Souza’s save.

The move really cheered up Cruzmaltino, who came close to scoring in the 35th minute with Philippe Coutinho, but reached equality in the 40th. Colombian Andres Gomez advanced from the right and crossed the ball to Portuguese Nuno Moreira, who rose a lot to finish with a header.

After the break, coach Fernando Diniz advanced his team’s lines, creating difficulties for the opposing defense. But Corinthians showed maturity to break through the opponent’s pressure and pull off a new surgical counterattack to score again.

In the 17th minute Breno Bidon got rid of Barros’s marking with a disconcerting dribble and passed the ball to Matheuzinho. The full-back then passed it to Yuri Alberto, who had a lot of freedom to pass the ball to Dutchman Memphis Depay, who, inside the small area, was unforgiving.

With the deficit on the scoreboard, coach Fernando Diniz had nothing left other than to start adding attacking players. Then came the Argentine Vegetti, the GB boy, the attacking midfielder Matheus França and the striker David. From then on, Vasco became disorganized. But, based on his will, he managed to create some danger, as in the shot that striker Rayan hit in the 47th minute and which stopped after a great save by goalkeeper Hugo Souza.

Corinthians, on the other hand, showed a lot of competence to close in on defense and hold on to the score that guaranteed them the fourth title in the Copa do Brasil.
