Honduras: The vote count has "serious delays", denounces the president of the CNE

The counting of votes to declare the winner of the presidential elections in Honduras has “serious delays,” denounced this December 20, the president of the National Electoral Council, also pointing out the existence of pressure.

In Honduras, party representatives have been reviewing since Thursday some 2,800 minutes with “inconsistencies” from the November 30 elections being contested by conservative businessman Nasry Asfura, supported by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and television presenter Salvador Nasralla.

Asfura, candidate of the National Party (PN), is ahead by just a few thousand votes over Nasralla, of the Liberal Party (PL, right).

“Serious delays continue in the special scrutiny,” denounced in X the president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Ana Paola Hall. “There are sectors within political parties that lend themselves to delaying the scrutiny and complicating the elections,” he lamented.

Hall, PL representative in the CNE, added that there is “a climate of intimidation against electoral officials.”

This Saturday, the PN delegate to the body, Cossette López, accused her colleague Marlon Ochoa, from Libre, of orchestrating an alleged plan to “cause an illegal detention” against her and Hall.

The PN deputy, Tomás Zambrano, pointed out that the “malicious delay” is carried out by Nasralla delegates together with the ruling Libre party (left), whose candidate Rixi Moncada came in third place.

Asfura, who had not spoken since last week, denounced that the boards “illegally” paralyzed the recount, while Nasralla indicated that the delay in the day occurred because the PN opposed invalidating records that were not accompanied by the signatures of the voters.

EU calls not to “hinder the declaration” in Honduras

The CNE has until December 30 to announce the new president and a mission from the European Union called on “all parties” not to “obstruct the declaration.”

Trump shook the Honduran elections by supporting Asfura and pardoning and releasing former president Juan Orlando Hernández (2014-2022), former leader of the National Party and who was serving a 45-year prison sentence for drug trafficking in the United States.

On Friday, the Trump administration revoked the visa of electoral magistrate Mario Morazán and denied it to Ochoa for allegedly “hindering” the process. Both are considered close to the government of leftist President Xiomara Castro, who claims that Trump’s “interference” manipulated the popular will.
