In December we have the Summer Solstice Day in the Southern Hemisphere, which this year falls on the 21st. The solstice is a day of the year that is longer than the others. On December 22nd, the Ecological Awareness Daya date that emerged in the 1970s and its main objective is to promote reflection on the impacts of human actions on the environment and encourage sustainable practices. In Brazil, the anniversary is celebrated informally.
THE National Youth from the National Radioaddressed the topic from the perspective of new generations, in 2023. And the Brazil Agency brought an important survey in a 2024 report, which shows that more than 95% of Brazilians claim to be aware of climate change.
On December 23, 1950, São Paulo singer Maria Christina Buarque de Hollanda was born, Cristina Buarque, who would be 75 years old if she were alive. With her soft voice, the sister of the well-known Chico Buarque also helped write the history of samba and MPB. THE Moment Threefrom the National Radiocelebrated her life and work when she turned 65, in 2015. Cristina passed away in April this year, due to complications from cancer, as reported by National Radio Agency and the Brazil Agency.
40 years ago, on December 23, 1985, Jorge Curi, a radio host and sports announcer from Minas Gerais, died. A talent who worked for 30 years in National Radiovehicle of EBC. Considered one of the best announcers of his time, Jorge narrated no less than nine World Cups and two Olympics, and also stood out in narrating motorsport events. THE National Radio paid tribute to his collaborator in two editions of the program All the voices. THE first in 2015 and the second in 2016.
This week we also have a sad memory. On December 21st, the fire that hit the Portuguese Language Museum, at Estação da Luz, in São Paulo, completed ten years. Even though the place was closed to visitors on the day of the tragedy, a brigade member died. He was found unconscious, was rescued, but did not resist. The fire was highlighted in this report by Brazil Agency and also in TV Brasilin 2016, in the newspapers Reporter Brazil and Reporter São Paulo. In 2021, the History Todayfrom the National Radiorecalled the episode, six years later.
