Venezuela and Russia speak again, now in Turkey

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez met this Thursday in Turkey to discuss the relationship between the two countries.

The meeting was first announced by the Russian ambassador to Venezuela, Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov, through a post on his Twitter account.

Subsequently, the Russian Foreign Ministry indicated in a statement that the parties highlighted the development of bilateral relations and reaffirmed the coincidences of the approaches on “the most pressing world problems”.

Likewise, the text points out, they condemned the “unilateral coercive measures.”

This meeting follows a visit by US officials to Caracas to discuss a “variety of issues,” including energy security, the White House confirmed Monday.

This very week, the Joe Biden Administration decided ban the import of Russian oil, gas and energy as a punitive measure for the invasion of Ukraine.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been an important ally for his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. In mid-February, the countries signed “more than 20 cooperation agreements” in different sectors, with an emphasis on energy, after the visit to Caracas of the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Yuri Borisov.

The Venezuelan Vice President referred to the meeting through a message on your Twitter account in which he assured that together with Lavrov they reviewed the “bilateral strategic relations and the complex international scenario”.

“Venezuela reaffirmed the principle of sovereign equality of States as a way to preserve balance for the sake of peace,” he said.

Rodríguez was accompanied by Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia, who is in Turkey to attend a diplomatic forum.

Accompanying a photo of the meeting, the Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, recognized by dozens of countries as interim president of the country, assured in a message on your Twitter account that the “role” of the opposition, as in Ukraine, “is to confront authoritarianism”

“Maduro’s authoritarian claims are the same as Putin’s. It is the same fight of democracy against authoritarianism,” he added.

Meanwhile, when asked about the new meeting, Andrea Tavares, political leader of La Causa R, one of the political parties of the opposition Unitary Platform, stressed that Venezuela’s support for Russia is evident, for which she considers that the Casa Blanca must observe those signals.

In addition, Russia’s interests in Venezuelan territory are quite high, there are debts, there are military bases with coordinates even already given by the former director of SEBIN, so it is an element that must be analyzed by those who consider that some kind of rapprochement can be made. ”, he said at a press conference.
