He Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet (and the two-seat F/A-18F version) is a twin-engine supersonic multirole carrier-based strike fighter, derived from the original Hornet, which replaced the F-14 Tomcat in the United States Navy and is notable for its greater size, range, power, payload capacity and advanced avionics (such as AESA radar and IRST), being the backbone of the carrier air wings, capable of air-to-air combat, ground attack, reconnaissance and electronic warfare, operated primarily by the United States Navy and also by Australia and Kuwait.
Key Features:
- Multifunction (F/A): combines fighter (F) and attack (A) roles in a single platform, a great strategic advantage.
- Aircraft carrying capacity: designed to operate from aircraft carriers, with reinforced landing gear and catapult/hook equipment.
- Size and power: It is larger and heavier than the original Hornet, with more powerful engines and greater fuel and weapons capacity.
- Advanced electronics: includes active electronically scanned array radar (AESA), infrared systems (IRST), and a digitized cockpit with touch screens (Block III).
- Versatile weaponry: can carry air-to-air missiles (AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM), laser or GPS guided bombs (JDAM, Paveway), anti-ship missiles, and a 20mm M61A1 Vulcan cannon.
