Nonprofit foundations pay higher salaries than companies

In 2023, private foundations and non-profit associations paid higher salaries than companies. Workers at foundations and associations received, on average, R$3,630.71, which corresponded to 2.8 minimum wages. Companies paid 2.5 minimum.Nonprofit foundations pay higher salaries than companies

In 2023, the base year of the research, the average value of the minimum wage was R$1,314.46.

Both non-profit institutions and companies had a salary level below that of public administrationwhich paid four minimum wages on average.

The data is part of a survey released this Thursday (18) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The study is an x-ray of private foundations and non-profit associations (Fasfil) in the country. The data was collected from the IBGE Central Business Registry (Cempre).

The survey began in 2002, but, as there was a change in methodology, data from 2023 can only be compared to those from 2022.

The institute explains that community associations, private foundations, religious entities, non-profit educational and health institutions are classified as Fasfil.

Other entities, such as unions, political parties, condominiums and parastatal bodies, such as Sistema S, are not part of the universe. This separate group is called non-profit entities rather than associations.

Almost 600 thousand

The IBGE identified that, from 2022 to 2023, the number of private foundations and non-profit associations grew by 4%, going from 573.3 thousand to 596.3 thousand.

This contingent represents 5% of the total number of organizations (11.3 million), a broad group that also includes companies and public administration bodies.

Private foundations and associations employed 2.7 million people, which represents 5.1% of the total number of workers in the countryand paid 5% of salaries.

Activities

The study identified that just over a third (35.3%) of private foundations and non-profit associations are classified as religious entities.

  • Culture and recreation: 89.5 thousand
  • Development and defense of rights: 80.3 thousand
  • Employer and professional associations: 69.5 thousand
  • Social Assistance: 54 thousand
  • Education and Research: 28.9 thousand
  • Environment and Animal Protection
  • Housing: 626
  • Others: 49.1 thousand

Of every ten workers in these institutions, four (41.2%) work in the health sectorthe largest employer, employing 1.1 million people.

The education and research area employs 27.7%, ahead of social assistance (12.7%).

While women make up 45.5% of all employees in organizations in the country, in the Fasfil universe they make up 68.9% of employees. Specifically in the area of ​​early childhood education, they are nine out of ten (91.7%) workers.

Nonetheless, as well as in the entire Brazilian labor marketwomen earn less than men in Fasfil. IBGE identified that in private foundations and non-profit associations, they receive 19% less than them.

For the coordinator of IBGE Registrations and Classifications, Francisco Marta, the survey shows the economic and social importance of this sector in the country.

“They complement government actions in services such as health, education, social assistance, defense of rights, environment”, he says. “It contributes greatly to the country’s wealth”

Size of companies

Private foundations and non-profit associations had, on average, 4.5 employees. But 85.6% of them did not have any formal employee. Only 0.7% had 100 or more employees.

The activities in which Fasfil had the largest sizes were hospitals (269.7 employees), health (132.5), higher education (73.9) and secondary education (73.8).

At the base of the ranking are religion, with 0.6 employees.
