The Permanent Commission of Congress approved the expansion of Reinfo until the end of 2026 and defined with their vote which parliamentarians supported this new extension of the mining formalization process. The decision was adopted amid questions about the repeated postponements and mobilizations promoted by unions linked to small mining.

The measure keeps the mining formalization process in force while waiting for the entry into force of the future Small Mining and Artisanal Mining Law (ASM), and reflects Parliament’s insistence on prolonging this mechanism that has been questioned for its potential effect of prolonging “unexpired licenses” for informal and artisanal mining.

In total, thirteen congressmen voted in favor of the expansion, compared to five who voted against and two who opted to abstain. The vote once again showed transversal alliances within the Congresswith support from right, center and left benches.

In contrast, five congressmen spoke out against the expansion of the Reinfoconsidering that new extensions without structural changes prolong mining informality: Ilich López, Arturo Alegría, Gladys Echaíz, Karol Paredes and Ruth Luque. While only two congressmen abstained: Waldemar Cerrón and Flavio Cruz.
