Rafael López Aliaga could be left out of the 2026 Elections: militants ask the JNE to annul internal elections

The presidential candidate of Popular Renewal, Rafael Lopez Aliagacould be left out of the Elections 2026. This after party members requested the National Election Jury (JNE) annul the internal elections that were held on November 30.

In the militants’ document sent to JNEbased their request on the alleged violation of due process, internal democracy, transparency, impartiality and equality among the participants in the primary elections.

In that sense, according to Infobae, the militants demanded that the same measure be applied as to Popular Actiona party withdrawn from the elections of April 12, 2026 because irregularities were detected in its internal election.

“Determine the impossibility of validating or correcting said internal process, as substantial and insurmountable defects have been established, in accordance with the precedent applied to Popular Action“, reads the document published by the journalistic medium.

Likewise, they requested that “the corresponding legal consequences be provided, including exclusion from the 2026 electoral process, if applicable, for failure to comply with the rules of internal democracy.”

Why do they ask to annul the internal elections of Renovación Popular?

According to Infobae, the request was made by Jorge Aspillaga Valderramawho assures that a list of candidates was not admitted by the Lambayeque region to compete in the internal elections.

Aspillaga denounces that alleged actions were recorded that led to the Regional Electoral Committee of Popular Renewal to reject their list and that the only list of applicants remained the one supposedly presented by parliamentarian Jessica Córdova, who allegedly acted as “judge” and “party” because she was designated as regional coordinator of Lambayeque while she presented her candidacy as deputy of said department.

According to the document sent to the JNE, “the Popular Renewal primary election process for the 2026 Elections does not meet the minimum standards of internal democracy, being irremediably flawed.”

Likewise, they indicated that, in the event of any validation of the internal process, “it would mean a direct impact on the legitimacy of the electoral system.”
