The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, called on the Colombian people to build a perfect union with Venezuela to protect the sovereignty of both countries. The message was issued this Wednesday during a commemorative event, where he insisted that binational integration is a historic mandate of the Liberator Simón Bolívar.
Maduro affirmed that despite the attempts of oligarchic sectors to divide both nations, union continues to be the way to guarantee stability. “The greatest guarantee of peace and stability is unity,” he expressed when calling on social movements, political and military forces of Colombia to strengthen the historical ties between both peoples.
A “Grancolombian” call to integration
The president reiterated that his exhortation is based on the Bolivarian legacy. “I make a Grancolombian call to the ordinary people of Colombia… I call them to a perfect union with Venezuela so that no one tries to touch the sovereignty of our countries and to exercise Bolívar’s ruling, that of permanent union,” he said during his speech.
He recalled that this message coincides with historical dates: the 200 years of the Founding Fundamental Law of Colombia and the 206 years since the creation of Gran Colombiaa project that gave freedom to South America and that, according to him, continues to be a guide for regional integration.
Maduro also expressed his affection towards the population of the neighboring country. “I ratify my deep love for the ordinary people of Colombia, for its social movements, for its political forces, for the Colombian military that I know very well,” he stated, highlighting the historical and cultural ties that unite both nations.
In his speech, he assured that Venezuela has resisted the attacks of imperialism and that this pressure has been transformed into strength. “All the damage that North American imperialism tries to generate… is being converted into blessings of life and an unbreakable will to fight for our society,” he said.
Regional integration and defense
Maduro’s call comes at a time of high geopolitical tension, in which Venezuela has denounced external threats and actions that it considers aimed at violating its sovereignty. In this scenario, the Venezuelan Government has insisted on the need to strengthen regional alliances, especially with Colombiaa country with which it shares history, border, culture and the original project of Gran Colombia.
The appeal to Bolivarian thought seeks to reinforce the idea that the union between both peoples is a strategic element for peace and stability in South America, in a context where Caracas denounces political, economic and military pressures coming from abroad.
