Guillermo Lasso makes changes to abortion for rape

The President partially vetoed the Law, in the terms for interruption of pregnancy and requirements.

The president of Ecuador, William Lasso, revealed this Tuesday, March 15, 2022, its decision on the standard approved by the National Assembly (Parliament) that regulates abortion after rape.

The President explained that his observations are aimed at the deadlines and said that the interruption of pregnancy, in case of rape, will be at 12 weeks in all cases. The National Assembly had stipulated 12 weeks for those over 18 years of age and 18 weeks for women who are minors and from rural areas.

It also stipulates that there requirements to access an abortion for rapesince the National Assembly does not establish them.

In April 2021, the Constitutional Court decriminalized abortion in rape cases. The resolution was approved by the full Court with seven votes in favor and the reservations of two magistrates, in an opinion that declared two clauses of the Comprehensive Penal Code (COIP) unconstitutional and opened the possibility of voluntary interruption of pregnancy in those cases. where a violation is found.
