Rich Thing: the Life of Wealthy Brazilians is one of the best-selling books in Brazil in 2025. Michel Alcoforado is also a columnist for Rádio CBN, creator of podcast It’s All Culture’s Faultspeaker and known as a “luxury anthropologist”, due to his work as a researcher of Brazilian elites.
For more than 15 years, the writer investigated how the super-rich live in Brazil, research that resulted in his most recent book. In the chat with Demori, Alcoforado explains that, in the country, wealth is not a condition but “a relationship”. “After a guy makes money, he needs to struggle to acquire a series of behaviors and master many codes to convince others that he is rich,” he says.
In that regard, the anthropologist comments that there are different types of rich people, mainly depending on the geographic context of Brazil. “The nouveau riche makes a big point of telling his own story, you know: ‘I was poor, I studied at public school and then I managed to build a business and made a lot of money’. He makes a point of leaving this in a fog, as if it were a natural event”, he says.
In comparison, Alcoforado argues that the “traditional rich also invented themselves”. “The job of traditional elites is to try to naturalize what was socially constructed, so that no one questions […]. That’s why it’s so difficult in Brazil, among other factors, to talk about taxing the rich”, he points out.
For the author, Brazilian social inequality is perceived by elites as a problem. “Essentially, the vast majority understand that this is an issue for the State to resolve, for those in power, but they do not believe that it is part of the problem”, he comments.
