In Brazil, and after being a fugitive from Albanian justice for seven years, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Alberto Fujimori’s government Augusto Blacker Miller was captured.
The former chancellor, who is currently 80 years old, was wanted by the Albanian justice system accused of alleged financial fraud in the construction of an incinerator for urban waste, and a request from the Prosecutor’s Office of that country for 18 years in prison is against him.
According to reports, he did not resist at the time of his arrest in a residential area of the Flamengo neighborhood, and it is expected that after the corresponding procedures he will be extradited to Albania to respond to the authorities to whom he has repeatedly claimed his innocence.
Who is Manuel Blacker Miller?
Manuel Augusto Blacker Miller was chancellor in the government of Alberto Fujimori and he supported the coup d’état of April 5, 1992, for which he was prosecuted along with other ministers of state of the time.
In November 2007, the Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of Peru handed down prison sentences between 4 and 10 years against ten former Fujimori ministers. On that occasion, however, he reserved the reading of the sentence against Blacker Miller, who was declared a contumacious prisoner.
He had already left the country in 2002 to settle in the United States, and later moved to Albania where he was arrested by Interpol in August 2019 due to an arrest warrant from the Peruvian Judiciary. It was then thought that he would be extradited to our country, but this was not possible because he had acquired Albanian nationality.
In Albania he continued doing business and kept a low profile until reports of an alleged million-dollar fraud came to light for which he will now have to answer.
