Villa Clara: at least 200 evacuees and 100 homes affected by current floods

In the Cifuentes municipality alone, the floods this Saturday caused damage to 15 homes, with a total loss of three of them.

LIMA, Peru – Around 200 people have already been evacuated in the municipalities of Sagua la Grande and Cifuentes, in the province of Villa Clara, due to flooding caused by intense rains.

A report from the state Cuban News Agency (ACN) points out that the emergency has motivated the activation since this Saturday of the Provincial Defense Council (CDP).

Milaxy Yanet Sánchez Armas, vice president of the CDP, confirmed to ACN that measures are taken to protect families in the areas involved: the town of Sitiecito and other surrounding towns.

So far, approximately 100 homes are reported to have been affected by the floods, the publication warns.

In the municipality of Cifuentes alone, the increase in flooding caused the damage to 15 homes on December 13, with a total loss of three of them, and left the community of Sitio Grande cut off.

The provincial delegate of Hydraulic Resources, Lizardo González Saavedra, explained that the situation is the result of heavy rains, with no reported effects on the region’s dams.

According to the official, the meteorological phenomenon has saturated the soil and caused minor river courses to overflow.

The Red Cross and the Villa Clara Integrated Medical Emergency System were also activated, the note states. Local authorities urged citizens to follow the Civil Defense guidelines and move to the designated evacuation centers.

The current rainfall further exacerbates the situation on the Island, affected by the passage of Hurricane Melissa at the end of last October.

The passage of the cyclone through eastern Cuba that left more than 90,000 homes damaged and around 100,000 hectares of crops affected, according to data from the United Nations System on the Island.

According to EFE, in addition to the damage to housing and agriculture, preliminary official reports recorded damage to “some 600 state medical infrastructures” and “more than 2,000 educational centers,” as well as bridges, roads, railways, dams, telephone antennas and, in particular, the National Electric System (SEN). About a third of customers in the five hardest-hit provinces were still without service almost two weeks after the impact.
