National Parks explained the environmental and safety reasons behind the restriction.

Colombia is recognized for its natural wealth and for having national parks that attract thousands of visitors every year. However, not all of these territories are open to tourism. One of them is the Sumapaz National Natural Park, a strategic ecosystem that, despite its environmental importance and its impressive landscape, is not enabled for recreational visits or ecotourism activities.
National Natural Parks of Colombia recently reiterated that the Sumapaz National Natural Park does not have a tourist vocation and, therefore, It is not authorized for the entry of visitors for recreational purposes.. The entity explained that the main function of this protected area is the conservation of the paramo, sub-paramo and high Andean forest ecosystems, fundamental for the environmental balance of the country.
According to the environmental authority, all actions within the park are focused exclusively on the biodiversity protectionthe scientific research and the environmental managementruling out any type of tourist use that could put these fragile ecosystems at risk.
From National Parks they specified that the only authorized entry corresponds to the embankment of the Chisacá or Los Tunjos Lagoonand only within the area delimited with protection ropes.
“It is recalled that the authorized entry is limited only to the embankment of the Laguna de Chisacá or Los Tunjos, within the area delimited with protection ropes, without access to the vegetation cover or bodies of water,” they noted.
This means that walking through the vegetation is not allowedenter lagoons, or carry out activities such as hiking, nature photography or free exploration.

Sighting or stopping on the road is not permitted.
The entity also clarified that Bird watching or contemplation of the landscape from the road is not authorized. that runs through the park. Although this road is public, its use as a pedestrian corridor is prohibited.
The reasons are related to safety: high traffic flow, improper parking and traffic conditions that represent a risk for those who try to stop or walk in the area.
National Parks warned that these practices can lead to accidents, so they asked citizens refrain from stopping or carrying out any activity on the road.
“Consequently, National Natural Parks of Colombia does not assume any responsibility for eventualities, incidents or accidents that arise due to non-compliance with these provisions or due to entry and stay in unauthorized areas,” they indicated.
A key natural sanctuary for the country’s water
The Sumapaz National Natural Park has an extension of 210,739 hectareswhere Andean forest and paramo ecosystems are preserved, home to a great diversity of flora and fauna. Furthermore, it plays an essential role in the water storage and distributionbenefiting millions of people.


There is the Sumapaz Paramoconsidered the largest in Colombia and the worldlocated in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes and extended through the municipalities of Cundinamarca, Meta and Huila. This territory is recognized as a true natural sanctuary, especially for its abundance of frailejones and their vital contribution to the national water system.
