If the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform has its final proposal ready in the coming days, the Chamber of Deputies could convene an extraordinary period for its analysis, in mid-January, in which it would also be possible to address some pending issues on the legislative agenda, said the Morena parliamentary group in San Lázaro.
“We are seriously looking with some members of the presidential commission to see if they have already completed their work and if there would be possibilities for them to send us the initiative through the Permanente to begin the analysis earlier, given that December is a good time to review and analyze calmly,” indicated the coordinator of the cherry bench, Ricardo Monreal Ávila.
If the electoral reform initiative were to arrive next week, “it is not ruled out that we begin, in mid-January, an extraordinary period,” said the legislator, who said that in that case other initiatives that have not been discussed could be discussed.
Among them, he explained, is a proposal already endorsed in the Senate, prepared by the president of the co-legislator, Laura Itzel Castillo (Morena), to write a broader and clearer description of the crime of sexual abuse. The above, as a result of the aggression suffered by President Claudia Sheinbaum in recent weeks.
Likewise, the Chamber of Deputies could take advantage of the extraordinary period to analyze the draft decree also already approved in the Senate, through which penalties for crimes against the environment were increased and new criminal types on the matter were established.
A third pending issue that was already endorsed in the Reforma and Insurgentes chambers, and that would be addressed in San Lázaro, are the modifications to the Federal Law of Contentious Administrative Procedure, whose purpose is to expedite trials in the area, especially in the case of tax debts, so that they do not last beyond the six months defined in the judicial reform.
However, he pointed out, the resolution of these issues depends on whether the results of the presidential commission are presented, and therefore an extraordinary period is called. Otherwise, “they can hold out until February 1, when the next period” of regular sessions begins.
