
The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, condemned on Wednesday any threat against the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado after his recognition with the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Any threat to María Corina Machado for winning or receiving the Nobel Prize is unacceptable. There should be no threat against her or anyone else. to work to support human rights in Venezuela,” Farhan Haq, Guterres’ spokesperson, said at a press conference.
The spokesperson stressed the importance of protecting all people who defend human rights in the country, in a context marked by political tension and repression of civil society.
Last October 10, Guterres congratulated Machado for winning the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize and highlighted that has been a defender of democracy and a voice of unity in Venezuela.
“At a time when democracy and the rule of law are threatened globally, the prize is a tribute to all those who work to safeguard civil and political rights around the world, and a moving reminder of the resilience and power of the democratic spirit,” the diplomat said then.
Ana Corina Sosa, daughter of María Corina Machado, He received the Nobel Peace Prize on Wednesday at the Oslo City Hall on behalf of the Venezuelan opponent, who could not travel to Norway in time to receive the award in person.
Machado dedicated the Nobel Prize to all the people of Venezuela and the heroes who fight for freedom, in addition to the world leaders who accompany and defend the cause.
