He Ministry of Health presented, through the Directorate of High Cost Medicationsa new drug application program for the management, treatment and control of diabetic foot.
The authorities reported that the program, inaugurated in Regional General Hospital Doctor Marcelino Vélez Santana, will have the administration of Heberprot-P as an effective protocol to combat the disease that affects hundreds of people in the Dominican population.
Through a releasePublic Health indicated that the new medicine care and dispensing center is an initiative that is part of the articulation and expansion of the National Diabetic Foot Networkeffort made by Ministry of Health together with him National Health Service (SNS), with the aim of impacting the population affected by diabetes.
This third unit of treatment of diabetic foot It is the result of the joint coordination of the institutions of the public sector of health of the Dominican Republic. The unit also works on Moscoso Puello hospitalsin the National District, and José María Cabral y Báez, in Santiago.
He minister of Health, Victor Atallahhighlighted the Government’s effort to guarantee a service adequate health care in the country, pointing out that treatment with Heberprot-P per patient is between 727,000 and 969,000 pesos, depending on the number of doses.
He minister indicated the importance and commitment to continue expanding the National Diabetic Network, which is promoted by the current Government through the different agencies of the health sector.
Currently, this service is assumed only by the program High Cost Medications.
Carlos Sánchez Solimandirector of High Cost Medicationsexplained the importance of the meeting and the effort of the different actors involved in the realization of these units, which come to play an important role in the promotion and protection of sectors not only with high impact, but also with little access to a program of this category.
During opening remarks, Dr. Willy E. Victoria highlighted the importance of unitwhich – he said – comes to complement arduous work in a large population lacking the serviceand that from now on will be supplied by this hospital.

He diabetic foot is one of the chronic complications more frequent; It is defined as the presence of infection, ulceration or destruction of the deep tissues of the feet, the incidence of which becomes an important cause of hospitalization and amputation non-traumatic, with a high impact on the population of the Dominican Republic.
The general prevalence of conditions caused by the different types of diabetes is around 12% of the population. According to studies of the International Diabetes Federation (FID), carried out in 2024, impacts 17% of the adult population of the Dominican Republic, equivalent to 1,203,700 registered cases.
To date, the care units of the diabetic foot have positively impacted 126 patients in the units of Santiago and Moscoso Puello.
