The Civil Police arrested a man suspected of involvement in the theft of works of art from the Mário de Andrade Librarythis Sunday (7). He was in the Mooca neighborhood, east of São Paulo.
He was identified through security cameras that recorded the criminals’ actions. Authorities are still looking for the other man who participated in the robbery.
On Sunday, eight prints from the Jazz series, by Henri Matisse, and five prints by Candido Portinari, all from the Menino de Engenho series, were taken. The works were part of the exhibition From Book to Museum: MAM São Paulo and the Mário de Andrade Library. This Sunday was the last day of the event.
The two men entered the Mário de Andrade Library and captured a security guard and a couple who were visiting the place. The criminals placed the works in a canvas bag and fled through the main exit.
THE São Paulo City Hall called Interpolinternational police, to prevent parts from being sold abroad.
