Deaths from pneumonia in Piura increase to 119

The Piura region reports 9,762 cases, between probable and confirmed, and 119 people who have died from pneumonia so far in 2025, according to statistics from the National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC) of the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

Piura registers more than 9,760 episodes of pneumonia, whose figure, according to Epidemiological Week 48 (until November 28) already exceeds the number of patients reported in 2024, whose figure reached 7,808 cases, however, in that year the deaths were 135 throughout the region.

The group with the most cases and deaths in 2025 is older adults, aged 60 and over, since the number of patients reaches 3,063, with 88 deaths. It is followed by those between 20 and 59 years old, with 2,169 patients and 20 deaths. Then follows the group of children under five years old, with 2,079 patients and 6 deaths. Also 1,462 cases are reported by the 5 to 9 year old group, with two victims and 989 patients. The group of 10 to 19 years old has 3 deceased people.

However, the number of people hospitalized from January to November 2025 reached 3,291, admitted to different health centers and hospitals in the Piura region. The provinces of Piura, Morropón and Sullana have more cases of pneumonia.

Given this panorama, specialists and doctors in the region make an urgent call to the population, especially the most vulnerable people who are children and older adults, to comply with the complete vaccination schedule as a fundamental prevention measure.

At the time, the Public Health specialist and member of the Piura Medical College, Julio Barrena, recommended continuing with immunization in risk groups: children, older adults and pregnant women; as well as the use of a mask for those affected with respiratory problems, hand washing and avoiding direct contact with a sick person if they are a risk group.

Likewise, specialists ask to go to health centers if they present symptoms, to avoid complications to their health.

It should be noted that although pneumonia cases will decrease as the temperature increases, this implies that dengue cases will also increase. To do this, they request vaccination against dengue, since the second dose rate in the Piura region is low, despite the fact that the first dose reached 96%.

On the other hand, the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) Piura began on November 17 the regional campaign “A decision of love, vaccinate them today!”, which will run until December 20, to immunize 10,000 minors, protecting them against diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella through the MMR vaccine, applied at 12 and 18 months; as well as against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough through the DPT vaccine, applied at 18 months and 4 years.
