María Corina Machado and Edmundo González held the “Nicolás Maduro regime” directly responsible for the death of the former governor of Nueva Esparta Alfredo Díaz, while he was in state custody.
In a release Together, both leaders assured that Díaz’s life and integrity were the exclusive responsibility of those who kept him “arbitrarily” detained at the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin), a center denounced by international organizations as a space for systematic torture and serious human rights violations. “This cannot be treated as a common death,” they emphasized.

The circumstances of these deaths, they noted, include denial of medical care, isolation, inhumane conditions and torture, demonstrating a “sustained pattern of state repression” and the use of the security system to punish and bankrupt dissidents.
Machado and González sent condolences to the family of the former governor and the people of Nueva Esparta, and assured that every omission and every responsibility will be documented. «There will be no impunity. Justice will come for Alfredo and for each of the victims of this tragedy,” they concluded.
