Dialogue breaks: teachers reject state proposal

Jorge Quispe / La Paz

The Confederation of Urban Teachers of Bolivia (CMUB) yesterday rejected the proposal for 3,300 items put forward by the Government, because “it does not satisfy” the request for 10,000 new items, said the leader Rolando Alejo Reynoso. Today the sector will resume its mobilizations in La Paz.

“We ask for a larger budget for education. That is the main issue, but the ministry does not attend to our demands, that is why tomorrow (today) we will return with the mobilizations and we do not rule out a national strike, because they ratify the proposal of the 3,300 items”, Reynoso added.

“They restrict a right”

For his part, the Minister of Education, Édgar Pary, explained that to the 2,500 items announced by President Luis Arce in February, another 800 were added in the last few hours. “There are 3,300 items, when in 2021 there were 1,700 and in 2020, none.”

Pary lamented that the measure of the teaching profession is activated when the school population returns to face-to-face classes. “They cannot restrict the right to education; Unfortunately, they have abandoned the coordination and the points that we had already agreed on Wednesday, ”he said.

The educators broke off the dialogue because they consider that the minister “is closed” in his offer, while they presented a counterproposal to the Government’s approach.

“Colleagues think 3,300 items are insufficient, when, for example, in 2020 nothing was given, the management has been closed and nobody left,” Pary insisted, later denouncing that the teachers do not want to support the educational reorganization.

Reordering

According to Pary, there are educational units that have two students in the first grade, five in the second grade, four in the third, eight in the fourth, four in the fifth and 17 in the sixth. “There are 13 teachers working there”, and for this reason a reorganization must take place.

The leader Reynoso replied that the ministry does not want to resolve the leveling of hours in the initial grade. “In addition, our colleagues from Physics and Chemistry continue to work for two years ad honorem, they are not paid for the hours they work,” he emphasized.
