PCV demands "peremptory" investigation into the death of Alfredo Díaz in state custody

The PCV affirmed that the death of Alfredo Díaz reinforces the urgency of releasing all political prisoners, detained arbitrarily, and warned that repression and human rights violations “are incompatible with a rule of law.”

The Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) requested this Saturday, December 6, an immediate and independent investigation into the death of Alfredo Díaz, former governor of Nueva Esparta, who died in the custody of the Venezuelan State, after being detained in El Helicoide.

“The PCV peremptorily demands from the competent authorities an investigation to determine and clarify the precise causes of the death of Alfredo Díaz, as well as the establishment of the corresponding political and individual responsibilities,” they requested through a message on the party X score.

Díaz was arrested in November 2024, during the repressive wave after the presidential elections, a period that national and international organizations have noted for the increase in arbitrary arrests against political leaders, social and union activists.

In a statement, the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the PCV expressed “deep concern” about the death of the former regional president and recalled that article 43 of the Constitution obliges the State to guarantee the life and integrity of all the people under its protection.

The PCV affirmed that the case reinforces the urgency of releasing all political prisoners, activists, workers, students and citizens arbitrarily detained, and warned that repression and human rights violations “are incompatible with a rule of law” and deepen the country’s political and social crisis.

The death of Alfredo Díaz revives questions about prison conditions and the lack of official information regarding those detained for political reasons.
