BioSur: the new commitment to restore thousands of hectares and reinforce climate action in the south of the country

BioSur seeks to restore the Pacific-Andean-Amazon corridor with environmental and social actions that will benefit more than 13,000 people.

The project GEF BioSur It was presented in Pasto as a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Program, National Natural Parks of Colombia and the Ministry of the Environment, with support from the Global Environment Facility.

The central purpose is recover ecological and biocultural connectivity of the Pacific-Andean-Amazonian corridor, a region where marine, mountainous and jungle ecosystems converge, and where local communities have supported conservation.

During the presentation, the entities highlighted that the proposal seeks to consolidate long-term coordinated action.

The project will last seven years and will work in areas of Nariño and Alto Putumayo, territories considered strategic for environmental restoration and protection of biodiversity.

Its lines of work include the recovery of degraded areas, the promotion of sustainable production practices and the strengthening of local governance processes.

BioSur is presented as a broad agreement that involves environmental authorities, international organizations and communities.

Those responsible for the project indicated that the initiative seeks to promote resilient biocultural landscapes and promote the implementation of the concept of bioculturality in territorial management, integrating environmental, social and productive dimensions.

Institutional spokespersons also participated in the launch and highlighted the importance of the project for restoration and climate action.

According to National Natural Parks, BioSur will accelerate restoration processes, strengthen the protection of strategic ecosystems and advance comprehensive conservation and territorial development actions in conjunction with communities.

The promoters highlighted that the initiative aims to work with those who have historically inhabited and cared for these spaces.

The project will directly benefit about 13,000 people in the region and includes interventions in more than 157,000 hectares under management and conservation processes.

The restoration of more than 150,000 hectares of forests and productive systems, as well as the contribution to the mitigation of approximately 3.1 million tons of CO₂ equivalent. BioSur also incorporates a social focus.

The proposal includes the strengthening of leadership of women, youth and ethnic communities, as well as the integration of traditional knowledge and local worldviews considered key to the preservation of the territory. Among the emblematic species are the jaguar and the andean bearwhose protection is part of the priorities of the biocultural corridor.

The Government of Nariño also pointed out that the initiative is articulated with regional strategies. The departmental government indicated that BioSur is linked to actions of the Development Plan related to climate change, biodiversity, sustainable production systems and risk management, in accordance with agreements previously worked on with environmental and social organizations.

The project seeks to integrate nature, culture and community through productive alternatives that harmonize conservation and development.

BioSur It is proposed as a corridor that reaffirms the country’s commitment to biodiversity, climate action and the construction of territorial peace, highlighting that its implementation will depend on a collective effort between institutions and local communities.
