The water laws are “an act of justice for Mexico,” said Efraín Morales, director of the National Water Commission (Conagua), who warned that with lies they wanted to “instill fear and uncertainty in producers.”

They are “desperate acts of those who see their privileges lost, of those who for years have enriched themselves at the expense of a natural resource so precious to all Mexicans,” he considered.

At the town conference, he insisted that with the reform, water will no longer be commodified; It will put an end to hoarding, overexploitation, and the illegal market, “where a few have enriched themselves at the expense of the rights of the majority.”

He stated that there will be “a totally transparent and public concession system, with zero tolerance for corruption.”

He highlighted: “part of what is being established in the initiative is to punish the crime of corruption,” such as when “resources or gifts are offered to obtain a concession title.

“We are restoring water back into the hands of the nation, to those who need it most.”

He asked the producers to stay informed. It is false, he maintained, that concession titles cannot be inherited, a property without water can be sold, or, among others, that producers will be criminalized.
