Exhibition of Cuban painter pays tribute to 20th century Havana

The exhibition Of the Mirror and Patience by Cuban painter Luis Enrique Camejo pays tribute to 20th-century Havana, a city that today struggles to preserve the splendor of those times.

According to the artist, the effort to visualize two fundamental moments of the so-called Wonder City and their differences prevails in the exhibition: one that spans from 1920 to 1950 of the 20th century and the other focused on contemporaneity.

“The concern arises because Havana was a jewel of America, one of the first towns of the Spanish colony and a relevant city that showed importance when some territories of the continent were still villages,” the author said.

As he specified, his work evidences civility, fashion patterns in terms of clothing, as well as the various population dynamics of the past and present, with the aim of recalling details that some do not know or have forgotten.

I am passionate about history and I like to see how things were before and after. That is why I want to put the spectator’s emotions into dialogue when contemplating civility, urban displacement, the way of behaving and dressing, ”she assured.

Of the Mirror and Patience It is the first personal exhibition of Enrique Camejo, who in his transit through the universe of visual arts made an installation for the Coffee Time exhibition in Collage Habana in 2020.

After that experience, the creator decided to resume his gaze towards the capital of Cuba and its morphology; now with 20 watercolors and two canvases painted exclusively for its presentation at the Máxima gallery.

Curated by the director of the exhibition space, Yaiset Ramírez, the opening of the exhibition is scheduled for next Friday, March 18, in connection with the celebration in Cuba of the 14th edition of the Havana Biennial.

Of the Mirror and Patience It will remain open to the public until April 2022 in another attempt to continue discovering the paths of contemporary Cuban art in its most dissimilar possibilities.
