If there is impunity, genocide will be repeated in the world: ambassador of Palestine

The Palestinian ambassador, Nadya Rasheed, warned yesterday that it is essential that the international community demand that there be no impunity for those responsible for the genocide in Gaza, otherwise, the atrocities “will be repeated in other places in the world.”

In a conference at the Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (Ciesas), he pointed out that allowing crimes of this magnitude to remain without consequence threatens not only Palestine, but “the conscience of humanity.” He also thanked the support that Mexico has maintained in multilateral forums to defend international law and the self-determination of the Palestinian people.

Rasheed stated that the world has witnessed “a genocide in real time” over the past two years, in which, he said, almost 70,000 Palestinians have been killed, but independent studies estimate that the real number could exceed 400,000, considering those who remain under the rubble or died from hunger or lack of medical care. More than 20,000 children have died, he added, and thousands were orphaned or suffered amputations.

He stated that more than 80 percent of the population has been displaced and that hospitals, schools, mosques and basic infrastructure have been deliberately destroyed.

“Peace is not a pause in violence: it is a right,” he expressed. He argued that the current ceasefire is fragile and that Israel has repeatedly violated it. He assured that as long as there is no justice, violence will continue to transform. “If the law cannot protect Palestinians under occupation, it cannot protect anyone,” he said.

The diplomat reiterated that Palestine remains committed to the two-state solution and to the path outlined by the New York Declaration, adopted in September, but stressed that Israel “has never complied” with UN resolutions or international law. He indicated that the Arab country does not demand anything more than the application of the law.

At that event, Ciesas academics reported that they sent a letter to the head of the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, Rosaura Ruiz, to ask her to join the academic boycott against educational institutions in Israel, in protest of human rights violations in Palestine.
