Since last Monday, December 1, hundreds of informal miners have kept a section of the Panamericana Sur highway closed, at kilometer 782 in the district of Ocoña (Camaná), demanding the approval of the Comprehensive Registry of Mining Formalization (Reinfo).
Although protesters have allowed vehicles to pass through brief truces of just a few minutes, circulation remains extremely limited.
This situation has generated the rejection of the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP), which points out that this type of actions constitute a crime and violates fundamental rights guaranteed in the Constitution.
“It generates losses that hit all productive sectors, especially agriculture, whose operation depends on the timely transfer of inputs, workers and food,” they indicated in a statement.
They pointed out that this blockade has interrupted the supply of wholesale markets, something that in the long run could put the country’s food security at risk.
“AGAP reaffirms its respect for peaceful protest; however, blocking roads is a serious crime that must be faced by the State with determination,” they stated.
They urged the government and state entities to act immediately to restore public order in these affected areas and clear the roads.
