Congress: They present reconsiderations to disqualify Pedro Castillo for 10 years

After the rejection of the disqualifications against the former president Pedro Castillo and his former ministers Betssy Chávez and Willy HuertaCongress has confirmed the submission of requests for reconsideration of the votes that failed to sanction the aforementioned authorities for 10 years of holding public office.

These reconsiderations seek to reverse the results of yesterday’s plenary session, December 3.

REJECTED APPLICATIONS

The reconsideration requests seek to annul the result that occurred in the Plenary yesterday, where the disqualification proposals did not reach the qualified majority necessary to be approved.

For the three cases, at least 68 votes were needed to be prohibited from holding public office for a decade.

However, with votes of 44 in favor, 31 against and three abstentions, the Plenary of Congress rejected the final report that recommended the disqualification for constitutional infringement for 10 years against former president Pedro Castillo for the coup d’état that he perpetrated on December 7, 2022.

In addition, they also rejected the reconsideration of disqualifying former minister Betssy Chávez Chino for the same time, for being a co-author of the coup. Likewise with the former Minister of the Interior Willy Huerta.

During the session, the former president’s lawyer, Carlos Torres Caro, was present, who recalled that there is already a previous sanction of two years of disqualification ruled by a court against his client. The former head of state, connected from the Barbadillo prison, appeared before Parliament, but to victimize himself, once again.

“I am here for a crime that I never committed. You are going to defend an atrocity. If the people gave me power, you took it away from me,” he mentioned.

Yesterday one of Betssy Chávez’s lawyers also participated, the controversial lawyer Raúl Noblecilla, who once again caused an altercation in Parliament and had to be removed from the session. After attacking a bench, the president of Congress, Fernando Rospigliosi, asked to avoid such comments, to which the lawyer responded: “I insult the entire Congress.” After that he was kicked out of the premises.

ESPINOZA IS DISABLED

The one who was not saved was the suspended prosecutor of the nation, Delia Espinoza. The Plenary Session of Congress managed to disqualify her for 10 years, with 71 in favor, 19 against and 3 abstentions.

The proposal was put to a vote again after a request for reconsideration presented by congressmen Norma Yarrow (Popular Renewal) and Jorge Montoya (Honor and Democracy). In the first vote, it did not reach 68
required votes.

After the decision, two requests to reconsider the vote were presented, which were rejected. Therefore, the measure continued its course without alterations.
