The disqualification proposal indicated that Pedro Castillo Terrones, Betssy Chávez Chino and Willy Huerta had transgressed more than 20 articles of the Constitution by announcing the dissolution of Congress on December 7, 2022, declaring a government of exception and proposing the reorganization of institutions such as the Judiciary, the Public Ministry and the Constitutional Court.

During the plenary session, the former president defended himself along with his lawyer and assured that he did not commit a coup d’état and blamed Parliament for “taking away his power” when he served as president.

“Today you are going to defend an aberration and a legal barbarity, congressmen. I am sure that when you ask for the vote, those who press the green button are those who, yes or yes, as a result of an election, did not want a son of the people to arrive at the Government Palace,” he said.

It should be noted that in this case, the aforementioned have been sentenced to 11 years, 5 months and 15 days in prison for the crime of conspiracy to rebel.

In the case of Castillo, he is already serving his sentence in the Barbadillo prison, where a 2-year disqualification from public service was also imposed.

On Huerta Oliva’s side, he must wait for the sentence to be ratified in the second instance in order to be confined in a penitentiary center. If not, he will remain free.

Meanwhile, in the case of Chávez Chino, she has been holed up in the Mexican Embassy since November of this year waiting for safe passage to leave the country.
