The Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) of the Senate reduced the list of candidates to occupy the title of office from 43 to 10 Attorney General’s Office (FGR)vacant after the resignation of Alejandro Gertz Manero. The selection, made up of five women and five men, will be submitted to the Plenary this Tuesday for approval by a qualified majority.

The block of women and men was approved with the votes of Brunette and his allies, while opposition legislators rejected the list considering that several profiles are close to the 4T project.
Legislative process: from the list to the shortlist
If the Senate Plenary endorses the list, it will be immediately sent to the president Claudia Sheinbaumwho must form a shortlist to return to the Senate. The three selected people will appear before the Plenary individually and, subsequently, the senators will vote by ballot. The person who obtains the majority of votes will be appointed attorney general for a period of nine years.
The plenary session of the Senate will approve this Tuesday the list of 10 candidates to occupy the position of head of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), which will be sent to President Claudia Sheinbaum to select the shortlist that will be returned to the Upper House to designate the new prosecutor.
The aforementioned list, made up of five women and five men, was prepared by the Political Coordination Board (JCP), which presides Adam Augusto Lopez Hernandezcoordinator of the parliamentary group of the National Regeneration Movement party (Morena), and joins together with his counterparts from the PAN, PRI, PVEM, PT and MC, Ricardo Anaya Cortés, Manuel Añorve Baños, Manuel Velasco Coello, Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez and Clemente Castañeda Hoeflich, respectively, from the 43 candidates who met the legal requirements, highlights the name of Ernestina Godoy Ramos, interim prosecutor and who is mentioned as favorite to occupy the position.
Approval of the list requires a qualified majority vote, equivalent to two-thirds of the senators present.
It is expected that the head of the Federal Executive will send the shortlist tomorrow for immediate voting, whose approval also requires a qualified majority of votes; Otherwise, an ordinary session of the full chamber will be called for next Thursday.
The process was activated after the resignation of Alejandro Gertz Manero, who left office on November 27 to occupy a diplomatic representation, not yet officially confirmed. The departure of the now former prosecutor generated criticism from the opposition, which accused pressure from the Executive power.
Once the Executive’s shortlist has been received, the Senate must call a vote. The new head of the Attorney General’s Office will be elected with a qualified majority and will take office immediately after his appointment.
