Study reveals that recovery from learning loss in Latin America will take 8 to 10 years

The resident representative and national director of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture in Panama, Melissa Wong Sagel, spoke this Monday on Radio Panama about the face-to-face return to classes of middle and high school students.

He stressed that a study published by the OEI in 2020 indicated that learning loss will take us 8 to 10 years in Latin America to recover the levels we had prior to the pandemic, so he recommended being patient.

“Let’s be realistic, we were very comfortable from home, despite the fact that there was no real learning and that it has been proven that virtual classes were not virtual classes, it was a way of not detaching ourselves from the knowledge of the academic part, but not all our boys have been able to reach these learnings. I think the most important thing was to go back to classes,” he maintained.

He stated that the socio-pedagogical teams of the Ministry of Education (Meduca) have been working on some protocols to identify those who need that contact a little more, regarding learning.
