Who is Enrique Valderrama, the young presidential candidate of the APRA party?

Enrique Valderrama Peña obtained the majority of votes within the APRA party and its electoral formula together with María Valdivia Acuña as vice president and Lucio Vásquez Sánchez as second vice president, becomes the renewed commitment of Haya de la Torre’s party in the face of the 2026 General Elections.

Leaving behind the formulas headed by historical members of the star’s party, such as Javier Velásquez Quesquén and his alliance with Carla García, daughter of Alan García, or Jorge del Castillo himself together with Mauricio Mulder, this young 36-year-old candidate would represent the renewal of this political movement.

With 100% of minutes processed, Valderrama’s list won with 25,982%, surpassing by a brief margin the Quesquén list, which obtained 24,694%.

This result reflects the attraction that its message of renewal is generating in an important sector of militancy, especially among younger members or members disenchanted with previous generations of the party.

WHO IS ENRIQUE VALDERRAMA?

Pitter Enrique Valderrama Peña was born on April 14, 1988 in Lima, and from a young age he was linked to journalism and politics. He studied Law and has worked as a columnist for the newspaper Expreso, in addition to founding the political analysis portal “Punto de Encuentro”.

An APRA activist since 2010, Valderrama has been a member of the party’s National Political Commission since July 2021, which places him among the young leadership cadres. His proposal is presented as a commitment to internal renewal: a “modern apra”, which recovers the historical doctrine of the party but adapted to current challenges.

Application and internal consensus: the commitment to youth and renewal

In the context of APRA’s internal elections to define its presidential formula towards the 2026 general elections, Valderrama heads the internal current called “Renewal with Unity.” His candidacy competes with other historical names within the party, such as Hernán Garrido Lecca, Jorge del Castillo and Javier Velásquez Quesquén.

Since its launch, Valderrama has indicated that his objective is to give APRA a new voice, free of controversy, and with a profile that connects with the new generations. “The party needs a clean face,” he declared in his presentation.

In his internal government plan, Valderrama proposes a social agenda aimed at creating youth employment, modernizing the State, promoting MSEs, and reforms in citizen security.

KEY PROPOSALS

Among the main lines of his proposal, Valderrama promotes a security plan that poses a “comprehensive shock”: increase the number of police officers, strengthen the border, and reform the penitentiary system, with private participation in a first stage.

In addition, its agenda includes a reform of the State aimed at efficiency and transparency, as well as economic inclusion policies that favor MSEs, agricultural producers and vulnerable sectors, with popular credit and access to technology.

BREAK WITH THE PAST OF THE PARTY

Valderrama has clearly expressed that his candidacy represents a break with the old APRA elites. He has questioned those who, in his opinion, contributed to the erosion of the party’s image, and is committed to recovering the original inspiration of its founder, Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre, with emphasis on social justice, solidarity and integrity.

His speech appeals to the feeling of renewal. It represents an attempt to connect with a younger electorate, less linked to traditional party cycles, and with expectations of real change.

Enrique Valderrama emerges as the face that wants to reconfigure the profile of APRA: less nostalgia, more proposals, and a bridge between the historical tradition of the party and the contemporary challenges of Peru. If the militancy ratifies its leadership as a presidential candidate, everything seems to indicate that there will be a before and after in the trajectory of the political group.

Their bet: to recover the validity of Aprismo through an ambitious social agenda, concrete security policies and an image of renewal. But he also faces the challenge of convincing a demanding electorate, marked by distrust of the political class.
