
A tragedy shocked the El Curricán sector of the Mara municipality, in the state of Zulia, on the night of Friday, November 28, when a fire destroyed a humble home. Two children died in the event.
The victims, according to information published in the newspaper The Zulia Regionalwere identified as Luirianny Duarte, 3 years old, and Alexander Duarte, 8 years old.
The authorities reported that a third child, brother of the deceased, managed to save himself.


Locked in and no escape
The accident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. in a house located on Avenue 9 in the El Curricán sector, an invasion area inhabited mainly by fishing families.
According to the neighbors’ story, the three brothers were allegedly locked up in the home at the time the fire broke out. His third brother, whose identity was not revealed, managed to escape through a window when he noticed the first flames and ran out in search of help.
The fire, which is presumed to have been caused by a short circuit between the electrical wiring and the zinc roof, quickly consumed the precarious structure.
Despair and discovery
The inhabitants of El Curricán immediately mobilized to try to rescue the little ones. With heavy objects, they broke the walls of the burning house.
“We realized when the house had been almost completely consumed by flames,” explained the neighbors, who unfortunately could not do anything when they found the bodies of Luirianny and Alexander already consumed by the fire.
Preliminary reports indicate that the children’s parents had left, leaving them alone and locked up.
Officials from the Fire Department and municipal and regional police attended the scene of the tragedy. The competent authorities began the corresponding investigations to determine the exact causes of the fire and establish responsibilities in this tragedy that mourns the family of the victims.
