The transfer of exotic species from Puerto Rico to the Dominican zoo begins

Santo Domingo.- The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) of Puerto Rico announced this Sunday the beginning of the transfer of exotic species from the island to National Zoological Park from the Dominican Republic.

The first transfer, paid for by the National Zoo, cThere are six rhesus monkeys, two males and four females, as well as two alligators, one of which is male, according to the statement from the DRNA.

The transfer request was confirmed by an official letter signed by the general director of the National Zoological Park in Santo DomingoDr. Nayib Aude, received on November 27.

“These species will be received and managed in accordance with established protocols and under the functions that correspond to us as a rescue center,” Aude indicated in the letter.

The objective is to transfer to that zoological the animals that are currently in the Center for the Rehabilitation of Native Species and Management of Exotic Species of Cambalache, in Arecibo, in the north of Puerto Rico.

Currently, this Center has around 35 snakes, 14 rhesus monkeys, 7 alligators and multiple birds.

The secretary of DRNAWaldemar Quiles, explained that with this measure they seek “an opportunity for these exotic species “they can live in an optimal environment for their development.”

The transfer begins

“For this reason, every time one of these species is captured, the Center’s staff looks for spaces that have all the requirements for the healthy coexistence of these animals, and one of those places is the National Zoological Park in Santo Domingo,” he added.

He Center for the Rehabilitation of Native Species and Management of Exotic Species of Puerto Rico suffered serious damage from the impact of the hurricane Maria in 2017 and it was not until August 2024 that reconstruction work began.
