Former president Leonel Fernández stated this Sunday that the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) must “pack up its bags” because it will leave power in 2028. by leading the so-called “People’s March”.
During the activity, he described the current management as “inept” and assured that the country is going through a crisis that “will only be resolved with a change of command.”
“Let them pick up their suitcases because it is certain that they will leave on the 28th,” he expressed in the central speech that ended the mobilization, which brought together a crowd that marched for more than three hours through different neighborhoods of the National District.
In the first points of his speech, Fernández defended the proposal to index salaries, promoted by Fuerza del Pueblo and Senator Omar Fernández. He highlighted that nearly 700,000 workers would improve their living conditions if the Government applied this measure, and stated that indexation would allow Dominican families to “eat three hot meals.”
People’s March: Leonel Fernández calls for urgent change in the country
“If the Government was sensitive, it would realize what this would mean for the people,” he said, reiterating that the People’s Force would implement salary indexation if it came to power.
The former president assured that the country faces a crisis of state solvency and affirmed that 52% of the infrastructure works started by this administration are paralyzed. “We can say, without fear of being wrong, that the Government is bankrupt,” he declared, noting that the economy shows a slowdown, with growth of only 2.2% of GDP between January and September, according to figures from the Central Bank.
Fernández added that this Sunday’s march sends a clear message to the Government. “If we had to describe this majestic act, this march of the people, we would say that it is an early plebiscite. We are telling the temporary tenants of the National Palace to collect their suitcases now,” he emphasized.
The also president of the People’s Force maintained that the current Government’s promise of change “has collapsed,” and described the management as inefficient and indolent. He reiterated that “without fear of being wrong we can say that the Government is bankrupt.”
Likewise, he attacked the PRM, which he called “inept and incapable,” and blamed it for the “uncontrolled increase” in food prices, which, he said, have risen up to 257%, in addition to the increase in the electricity subsidy, which went from 58 billion pesos in 2020 to 98 billion currently.
Fernández stated that the PRM failed to fulfill its campaign promise to reduce the cost of the basic basket by 30% and that, on the contrary, during this administration “what there has been is an increase of 48%”, which keeps essential products out of the reach of the poorest families.
He also explained that the high electricity subsidy responds to the increase in technical and commercial losses of the distribution system, which went from 27% in 2020 to 44% “today.” “If the subsidy has increased from 58 thousand to 98 billion, it is due to the incompetence, ineptitude and incapacity of those who run the Dominican Republic today,” he concluded.
