The Cuban Grandmaster Omar Almeida closed his foray into the Ibero-American Championship of Chessin its quick game mode, and the victory achieved in its last presentation catapulted it to the throne of the contest held in Saint Bou de Llobregat, in Spain.

Ameida sealed his performance in the contest with a balance of six successes, two draws and only one setback to round out seven points out of a possible nine.
Fiorito himself and the Chilean Cristóbal Henríquez reached that same number, but the tiebreaker system placed them behind the Cuban, in that order.

Local player Javier Habans also finished his performance with seven lines after overturning the king of Argentine Tomás Sosa, but the formula to undo the tie left him in control of the fourth seat.
The Ibero-American rapid duel competition – 15 minutes for each player and five bonus seconds after each movement – brought together 86 players from 11 nations in the region.
Almeida’s triumph marks a successful end to the year for Cuban chess, which recently enjoyed the unprecedented third place by Maritza Arribas at the World Championship of the senior category, held in Italy.
The woman from Santiago competed in the segment for players over 50 years of age, with a record of five wins, an equal number of draws and a single setback.
