Asocaña rejected the murder of a mill worker in his region and called for urgent action in the face of increased insecurity.
Ricardo González, 22, was captured in Cartagena for his alleged participation in the beating that caused the death of Jaime Moreno, a student at the University of Los Andes.
Claudia Calero, president of the union, stated that these types of situations have become an object of concern, considering that the lives of dozens of employees are exposed to the actions of violent people.
“Today I speak with deep pain and indignation about the attack that occurred this morning in Puerto Tejada. It happened that a security patrol of a sugar mill was attacked. A worker was attacked and was killed, while another was injured,” he said.

In his opinion, there is a insecurity crisis that must be addressed by the national authorities, becoming an issue that cannot wait any longer and requires immediate solutions to address violent events.
“This new fact confirms that the insecurity reached a breaking pointwe cannot accept that going to work is a risk to life,” Calero highlighted.
He emphasized that “this year there are already six collaborators murdered and eight injured in 13 crime situations in different areas.”

In that sense, he reiterated his call to the Executive with the purpose of join efforts to contain attacks by both armed actors and common crime, who put the lives of sugarcane agroindustry workers at risk.
“As a sector we demand that the National Government and the Prosecutor’s Office act once and for all against all these violent individuals. That the arrests and prosecutions that are needed be done quickly,” he assured.
Claudia Calero emphasized that “we cannot live in this wave of violence and crime and it is the workers who pay the price.”
From Asocaña they insisted that These types of actions have been taking place regularly in the surroundings of the sugar mills.
“There have been constant robberies, intimidations and attacks against rural workers confirming that the insecurity situation has reached a breaking point,” concludes the document shared by the sugar sector.
