Plates with chips for motorcycles will be mandatory from December 17

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) ordered that as of December 17, the use of new plates with RFID chips for motorcycles, mototaxis and quadricycles of category L will be mandatory, in order to improve vehicle identification and combat crimes such as robberies and assaults committed in these vehicles, especially in Lima.

The back plate will measure up to 17 x 20 cm, with a white background, seven alphanumeric digits (3 letters and 4 numbers, such as ACB-0000) and larger letters for greater visibility; the front will be transparent holographic with the chip that stores the license plate and engine serial number, allowing quick readings by authorities using scanners to detect stolen vehicles or vehicles linked to illegal activities.

The change applies immediately to new vehicles purchased since that date; For existing ones, the MTC will publish a replacing schedule in the coming weeks, with an approximate cost of 27 soles per procedure before Sunarp, assumed by the owners, thus strengthening national oversight.

Legal specialist of the Directorate of Road Transport Policies and Standards of the MTC, Yushara Sacsa, told Andean that from December 17 the use of these plates will be mandatory both for those who purchase new motorcycles and mototaxis throughout the country.
