The state Civil Protection Secretariat reported that the return occurred this Thursday. However, another 24 displaced families have refused to return. They ask to be permanently relocated to San Cristóbal de las Casas, where they have lived since they were forced to leave. They assure that unsafe conditions prevail for them in Chenalhó.
“We did not want to return because the armed group continues to operate,” the spokesperson for those families told the newspaper. The Herald of Chiapas.
He recalled that his father was murdered in the conflict on May 26, 2016. In a subsequent study, the Colegio de la Frontera Sur reported that the inhabitants were expelled that day by an armed group after refusing to support the Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) in the municipal election the previous year. According to the report, two people were killed and 54 families displaced in the attack.
“We only ask the government to relocate here, because there is water, electricity and drainage. The previous government promised to relocate us, but did not deliver. We are not going to return to the ejido, we have already decided to stay here,” added the spokesperson.
Meanwhile, the families who decided to return to the town received homes, groceries, health and winter accessories, and chickens.
Civil Protection said it will monitor the families for a year until they ensure the full restoration of their rights.
