Peru will not allow irregular migration on the border with Chile, assured the chancellor

The chancellor Hugo de Zela reported this afternoon that they are coordinating with the Government of Chile to address the situation of migrants at the border.

“We have decided to form a binational migration cooperation committee. This committee should be inaugurating its tasks on Monday morning. The idea is to resolve the cooperation problems between both countries,” declared the head of the Foreign Ministry.

“The Government’s policy is that we will not allow irregular migration. There is a clear and firm position of the Government on this. We do not have the conditions or the capabilities to have more migrants,” the authority added.

“At the internal level, an extraordinary Council of Ministers has been convened this afternoon to approve the state of emergency in Tacna,” he added.

On November 21, Chilean presidential candidate José Antonio Kast issued an ultimatum that has ignited the immigration debate.

He gave a period of 111 days for immigrants in an irregular situation to leave Chile and warned that if they do not do so they will be detained and expelled.

Regarding this, the chancellor said: “Mr. Kast is a candidate for the Presidency of Chile. He has not yet been elected and we still do not know if he will be elected. Therefore, he is not a Chilean authority and cannot speak on behalf of the Government of Chile.”
