The last year in which the position of Brazilian team with the most Libertadores belonged to one club alone was 2011, when São Paulo, the only three since 2005, was equaled by Santos. Since then, the duo Sanntos and São Paulo have seen Grêmio, Palmeiras and Flamengo reach the same three titles. Starting this Saturday (29), the place as America’s greatest conqueror in national football, as the country’s first four-time South American champion, will go to Verdão or Rubro-Negro.

The “Eternal Glory” will be put into play from 6pm (Brasília time) at the Monumental U Stadium, in Lima (Peru). THE National Radio broadcasts the Libertadores decision live, with the National Ball Show starting at 5:30 pm. The narration will be by Luciana Zogaib, with comments by Rodrigo Ricardo and reports by Marcelo Smigol and Rachel Motta.
Andreas Factor
Palmeiras and Flamengo meet again in a Libertadores final four years after the confrontation at Centenário, in Montevideo (Uruguay). Midfielder Raphael Veiga, who is still part of the Alviverde squad, opened the scoring, but striker Gabriel Barbosa, a Red and Black idol now at Cruzeiro, equalized. Four minutes into the first half of extra time, the final move: midfielder Andreas Pereira lost the ball, striker Deyverson took advantage and shot past goalkeeper Diego Alves. Verdão 2 to 1.

As fate would have it, Andreas, in 2025, will be on the champion side in the 2021 Libertadores. The midfielder was hired in September, from Fulham (England). In the presentation, he did not escape questions about the failure in Montevideo. “What happened in the past is over. I arrived at this great club and I want to write a beautiful story”, said the player at the time.
In October, the number 8 alviverde met Flamengo again, in the duel between the teams for the Brazilian Championship, in Rio de Janeiro. Rubro-Negro won 3-2. Hostiled, the midfielder caused an uproar among the home fans when, ironically, he slipped on the wet Maracanã lawn while taking a free kick.
Fight in Brasileirão
Andreas was one of the 11 usually starting athletes who were spared by Abel Ferreira in the team that played against Grêmio last Tuesday (25), at the Arena, in Porto Alegre, for the Brasileirão. The 3-2 defeat practically removed Palmeiras from the fight for the national title, which is close to Flamengo.
With two rounds to go, Rubro-Negro has 75 points, five more than the São Paulo team. Even preserving athletes in the starting line-up, albeit less than Verdão, the Cariocas sought a 1-1 draw with Atlético-MG at Arena MRV, in Belo Horizonte.
Abel for history
The Portuguese Abel Ferreira can establish important marks in the case of a tetra Palmeiras. He can isolate himself as Verdão’s most successful coach, with 11 cups, one more than Oswaldo Brandão. Furthermore, he would reach his third Libertadores, equaling Osvaldo Zubeldía, three for Estudiantes (Argentina) between 1968 and 1970, as the second coach with the most titles.

Abel, Andreas and Veiga are not the only ones remaining from 2021 in this Saturday’s decision. In the Alviverde squad, goalkeeper Weverton (who is recovering from a broken bone in his right hand), defender Gustavo Gómez and full-back Joaquín Piquerez also competed in that final. In the red-black, midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta and strikers Pedro, Michael and Bruno Henrique were in the duel, without forgetting Filipe Luís, at the time owner of the left side and now team commander.
Uruguayan protagonism
Arrascaeta, in fact, is the one who holds the spotlight on the Flamengo side of the final. The Uruguayan is experiencing his most decisive season for the club, with 23 goals and 17 assists in 59 games. Considering only the Brasileirão, the midfielder participated in at least one goal per match, as he found the net 18 times and distributed 14 passes in 32 matches. He can reach his 16th title for Rubro-Negro, just like Bruno Henrique, expanding his status as the player with the most achievements for the Rio team.

The stage for Saturday’s final is one of good memories for them and all Flamengo fans. It is the same one in which the club won the Libertadores title in 2019, beating River Plate (Argentina) 2-1, with two goals from Gabriel Barbosa. Arrascaeta, Bruno Henrique and Filipe Luís were starters that day, in addition to the then defender Rodrigo Caio, now red-black assistant coach.
Probable teams
Palmeiras should go to the field with: Carlos Miguel; Khellven, Gustavo Gómez, Murilo and Joaquín Piquerez; Bruno Fuchs, Andreas Pereira, Raphael Veiga and Allan; Flaco López and Vitor Roque. Midfielder Lucas Evangelista and striker Paulinho, injured, are certain to be absent, while Weverton could be new to the bench, if he is fully recovered.
The probable Flamengo will have: Agustín Rossi; Guillermo Varela, Danilo, Léo Pereira and Alex Sandro; Jorginho, Erick Pulgar and Giorgian de Arrascaeta; Everton Cebolinha, Jorge Carrascal and Bruno Henrique. Strikers Gonzalo Plata (suspended) and Pedro (muscle injury to his left thigh) are out. Defender Léo Ortiz (right ankle strain) is doubtful.
