Mexico suspends imports of pork products from Spain due to swine fever outbreak

Mexico has suspended imports of pork products from Spain following a swine fever outbreakreported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Official Veterinary Services (SVO) of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Spain, reported the detection of two wild boars positive for the African swine fever (ASF) virus in the municipality of Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona, ​​the agency indicated.

Therefore, he explained, this measure is taken in line with international protocols to protect national pork production from possible risks to animal health.

“As a result of this case, the first in the European country since 1994, Mexico, through the National Service for Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), decided to suspend the import of products of pork origin from Spain, while animal health information is received on the attention to the outbreak,” he reported in a statement.

Pork products and byproducts will not enter Mexico

Senasica in turn pointed out that the objective is to avoid animal health risks to national pork production, so they will not be able to enter Mexico:

  • Pork
  • Products and by-products such as hams or sausages
  • Matured products
  • Pig offal for human consumption
  • Raw material for the production of pet food

Agriculture stressed that this measure applies both to commercial imports and to products carried by tourists, residents and Mexican people when entering national territory.
