Migrants without documents block the Tacna-Arica crossing and paralyze border traffic

Migrants without documents block the Tacna-Arica crossing and paralyze border traffic

A blockade carried out by more than a hundred undocumented migrants this Friday interrupted transit in both directions of the border line between Peru and Chile, in the Tacna-Arica sector.

Participants placed objects such as stones, mattresses and luggage along the international highway. As they explained, they are seeking to be allowed to enter Peruvian territory to continue on their way to their places of origin.

The measure generated congestion that affected trucks, interprovincial buses and private cars on both sides of the border.

During the day, agents from the Chilean Carabineros held talks with the group to obtain a temporary break.

During that period, controlled transit was allowed, while the migrants warned that they would resume the closure if they did not receive a response from the Peruvian State. They also noted that they left Chile because immigration policies became stricter.

On the Peruvian side, members of the National Police reinforced their presence while a climate of tension remains.
