2026 Budget seeks to conserve ecosystems, says Minister of the Environment

The minister of AtmosphereMiguel Espichán Mariñas, reported to the Congress of the Republic that, to address the priorities of the sector, an annual budget of S/ 987 million has been planned, corresponding to the next fiscal period.

The official pointed out that, by 2026, the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) has defined strategic goals aimed at strengthening the conservation of ecosystems, optimizing solid waste management and promoting the development of eco-businesses in the Amazon, with the purpose of consolidating the path towards a sustainable Peru.

Among the objectives set are the conservation of 1.7 million hectares of forest and the improvement of the quality of life of approximately 3.4 million citizens through more efficient management of solid waste.

Likewise, through the Minam Biobusiness Program, the financing of 1,874 sustainable enterprises in the Amazon will be promoted, contributing to economic dynamism and the protection of biodiversity.

Espichán specified that, by 2026, intervention will be carried out in 17 regions with actions to recover areas degraded by solid waste, improvements in the public cleaning service and implementation of 10 monitoring networks to strengthen environmental oversight. These initiatives represent an estimated investment of S/ 182.3 million.

The minister pointed out that, through the National Environmental Certification Service for Sustainable Investments (Senace), it is planned to certify investment projects for an estimated value of US$ 10.7 billion.

Greater surveillance

Likewise, he reported that the Environmental Evaluation and Supervision Agency (OEFA) will train 1,622 entities in inspection matters, while the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) will reinforce the surveillance and control of 19.7 million hectares corresponding to protected natural areas (ANP).

The sector will also strengthen weather forecasting, seismology and volcanology systems, and continue the restoration of 5,000 hectares affected by forest fires.

Likewise, thanks to the work of the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP), 2.5 million fingerlings will be transferred to native and rural communities in the Amazon, contributing to food security and improving the quality of life of these populations.

The head of Minam stressed that these measures consolidate environmental stewardship and the capacity to respond to disasters, in addition to promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. “We reiterate our commitment to execute this budget with transparency and efficiency,” he emphasized.
