Serra Puche: Addressing the deficit and agreements in T-MEC will boost growth

Serra Puche, who was also Secretary of the Treasury in the government of Ernesto Zedillo, highlighted that currently fiscal policy is complicated at the moment because public finances went from a balance (which was valued by analysts and rating agencies) to pressure.

That is going to have to be faced now. It is urgent to face this issue (…) I think it is easier to cut (expense) than to generate new income but it is healthier to generate new income than to cut (expense)

Jaime Serra Puche, president of the Board of Directors of BBVA México

Regarding exports, Serra Puche said that they can be improved with a good negotiation of the T-MEC with the governments of the United States and Canada.

“But it has to be a good negotiation in the sense that it favors the growth of our exports,” he noted.

They expect ‘delicate issues’ in energy during the renegotiation of the T-MEC

The director of BBVA Mexico said, in a meeting with the media, that although he does not know if the new trade discussions with the United States and Canada will be a renegotiation or a review, it is very certain that there will be tensions in energy matters.

“Very delicate issues are going to come up in the negotiation,” he assured. “Energy is a very fundamental issue for all parties and for the commercial integration of the United States with Mexico.”
