The legal consultant of the Executive Power, Antonio Peraltaaffirmed that the 50+1 has not been an issue foreseen by the president Louis Abinader and that these are not objects of referendum.
“Speaking in personal terms, I don’t understand why that has to be demonized because in other countries it is established that when a candidate has 50 percent, it means that there is no need for a second round”expressed during an interview on the radio program El Rumbo de la Mañana, which is broadcast by RCC Media.
He explained that the issue of the constitutional amendment is a package of legislative reforms that Abinader announced when he was a candidate and that is established in the government program.
He pointed out that these issues are not subject to referendum either.
In addition, he said that one of these reforms involves touching the Constitution “slightly” and that if it is modified, it would reduce the power of the current president.
“President Luis Abinader is not amending the Constitution to benefit from a third re-election,” he said in the interview, adding that what he wants to change should be reviewed, not what is presumed.
